Pass it on

Primary Bank is Siobhan Davies Dance's primary schools programme, replicating Siobhan Davies’ choreographic method, which is driven by a process of intelligent questioning and enquiry.

Pass it on is Siobhan Davies Dance’s current project for primary schools, offering support and guidance for teachers to deliver dance in the classroom. It offers primary school teachers from different schools a creative movement workshop, which links to Siobhan Davies Dance’s latest work. The workshops introduce ways of delivering movement sessions and feeding these ideas into teaching subjects such as literacy, history and science. Once teachers have attended one of these professional development creative movement workshops, they can then share this approach with other teachers in their school, who in turn share it with each of their own classes.  Pass it on is adaptable to different age groups, abilities, and curriculum topics.

Teachers will have the opportunity to submit Pass it on outcomes, such as films, photos, poems or drawings for the annual Pass it on exhibition on this website.

The project was piloted in June-July 2010 for teachers from 19 schools. They cascaded the workshop to approximately 280 teachers, and the workshop finally reached over 6000 children.

This film was made during the 2010 pilot and shows excerpts from the workshops, and interviews with project staff and participating teachers.

Feedback from Pass it on 2010:

‘Teachers are now building these ideas into medium term planning. Our topic for history is London in WW2 next term and dance is now linked in using the ideas form the workshop.’
Teacher from SS Peter & Paul Catholic School

‘Doing the practical workshop myself helped me to cement the ideas so I could teach effectively to my class.’
Teacher from Merton Park Primary School

‘It gave me confidence to think about using movement in connection to many areas of the curriculum.’
Teacher from Charlotte Sharman Primary School

‘It was great to come away with lesson plan ideas. Better than learning a dance routine. I can see how this idea could be adapted.’
Teacher from Merton Park Primary School
