Primary Bank Big Dance

A celebration of the Primary Bank project

Saturday 12th July 2008

The finale of Primary Bank was two ambitious performances at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre and at Siobhan Davies Studios. With support from artists, the pupils were challenged to choreograph using different spaces around both buildings, to encompass different art forms such as live and recorded sounds from the project, ceramic sculptures and film. This was an opportunity for the pupils to utilise everything they had been exploring for the past year.

“We worked with the pupils in the same way as I engage with my own company. We listened to, respected and focused their comments and actions. In turn they gave us fresh ideas and perspectives into our thinking.” Siobhan Davies

Each pupil shined and approached the performance with a professional attitude and complete focus.

“I enjoyed the whole thing – the amazing display of movement around the building, they displayed amazing confidence and maturity.” Mrs Kerr, audience member

Southwark Primary School Teachers Day

Tuesday 11th March 2008

Selected key stage two teachers from four Southwark Primary schools were invited to observe a Primary Bank workshop in music and dance taking place with the year 5 pupils from Charlotte Sharman School. The day included discussions with Siobhan Davies, the class teachers, artists and dancers directly involved in delivering the project. Teachers took part in a practical dance session demonstrating how Primary Bank structures each dance session with learning outcomes, practical exploration and discussion. The teachers experienced how this dance lesson can become a starting point to initiate a whole terms’ work, supporting and enhancing the delivery of the curriculum.

“Implementing these ideas does not feel like a burden. It directly links with pre-existing curriculum. I am a huge fan of Siobhan Davies. It was an honour to meet her today. Look forward to future projects.”

Shake It, Rattle It and Roll

Saturday 29th March 2008

Primary Bank welcomed children and their parents to Siobhan Davies Studios to come and take part in dance, music and architecture workshops that engaged both children and adults. This workshop was based on a movement and music workshop that was originally delivered for the year 5 pupils.

“Very stimulating and accessible for non specialists. Thanks! This was better than our expectations I liked the whole day, all of it – the dance, sound and making element, excellent!”

Primary Bank Open Day

Monday 3rd December 2007

This was a wonderful opportunity for the whole of Charlotte Sharman School to take part in Primary Bank. Through workshops in dance, set design and art, lead by South London Gallery, the whole school gained an understanding of the project the year 5 pupils were taking part in.

These are just a small selection of comments from the parents:

“It was fun to share ideas with my daughter”
“I enjoyed expressing myself through being creative in movement and art.”
“The evening gave me more understanding about what the children have been doing in school.”
