Magpie Dance – Choreographic Project

Magpie Dance – choreographic project 2009

In July 2009, Siobhan Davies Dance worked with Magpie Dance’s youth and adult dancers over six days. Led by Siobhan Davies Dancer Pari Naderi and JADE Fellow Tammy Arjona, this intensive project offered the participants the opportunity to work independently to create a group piece of choreography. This was presented informally at the end of the week in the Roof Studio at Siobhan Davies Studios, where the group worked for the final three days of the project.

Pari Naderi was keen to develop the work she had initiated during the first project in 2008.

“I've never thought of myself as a choreographer,”said Pari. “I've provided a sound structure that they've fitted their movements in. It's important that they own it and have a bit of pride in it.”

Magpie Dance – choreographic project 2008

In April 2008, Siobhan Davies Dance embarked on a choreographic dance project for Magpie Dance, an inclusive dance company for people with and without learning disabilities based in Bromley for over ten years. Over four days company dancer Pari Naderi shared the company’s approach to creating choreography providing a chance for Magpie dancers to further their knowledge and skills in choreography and dance.

Avril Hitman, Magpie Dance’s Artistic Director commented:

“We were delighted that our dancers had the opportunity to work with a current and renowned dance company. The dancers thoroughly enjoyed working with Pari from Siobhan Davies Dance and have learnt new methods of devising choreography which will feed into individual future choreographic work - it was fantastic!”

Pari Naderi, dancer from Siobhan Davies Dance commented:

“I am so glad for the time I spent with the Magpies and their team. Both the adult and the youth group are wonderful to work with and to feed their curiosity and watch them develop their skills and understanding of how we can make and perform dance was a joyful experience.”
