A programme of work encouraging the discussion and exploration of making and presenting new choreography for and with young people led by professional choreographers
The Making Space Network is for youth dance groups and their leaders, local authorities and dance organisations in the south London boroughs of Southwark, Lambeth, Merton, Kingston-upon-Thames, Croydon, Sutton and Wandsworth.
The Network is a forum in which we explore how youth dance groups can make their strongest work, reach new audiences and connect across south London. Together we want to make youth dance in south London the best it can be.
Working with three professional choreographers the groups explore how they make and show their work. The activities of the Network include discussion, practical workshops, performing and watching dance.
The project has two main areas of focus- the choreographic content of the work that young people produce and how youth dance groups can help to support each other in the work they do. Each group nominates 1 -2 young people to represent their group through the role of Young Ambassador. These ambassadors attend workshops and meetings on behalf of their group, enabling a large number of people to be represented at each event. The Young Ambassadors receive training in their role and are supported by their group leaders to share what they have done with the rest of their group.
Youth dance groups interested in joining The Making Space Network 2012-13 should contact Janine Harrington janineh@siobhandavies.com.
“The Making Space project has opened a new way of connecting and networking for us. It has given us the chance to collaborate, and build new opportunities” Group leader
