Dance and Artworks
This autumn Siobhan Davies Dance and Ikon collaborate to present The Collection which brings together dance artists, film-makers and visual artists in two spaces in Birmingham city centre. The Collection looks at the interface between contemporary art and dance.
At Ikon Eastside
Siobhan Davies Dance brings a new piece Minutes to Ikon Eastside. Created by Siobhan Davies with Catherine Bennett, Matteo Fargion, Henry Montes, Deborah Saxon and Matthias Sperling, Minutes is performed continuously for four hours each day and presented as a series of short, detailed, powerful and often humorous episodes. The gallery setting allows the audience to move freely around the space, to create their own time frame and perspective of the work and appreciate the immediate proximity of the dancers.
For Minutes, Anri Sala has created A Solo in the Doldrums, a snare drum whose seemingly self-activated sticks perform an unseen dance by Siobhan Davies.
Lying in Wait, a three-screen film installation by Idris Khan and Sarah Warsop is presented in a space adjacent to Ikon Eastside. Formed of layered movement the images travel between the screens. A Siobhan Davies Dance and Victoria Miro Gallery co-commission.
At Ikon Gallery, Brindleyplace
Programmed concurrently at Ikon Gallery in Brindleyplace is an exhibition by the Russian artists Victor Alimpiev and Semyon Faibisovich. This exhibition is a perfect counterpoint to the proposition of Siobhan Davies Dance.
Note: Charlie Morrissey will replace Henry Montes on 1-4 October. Minutes contains strong language.
The Collection was originally conceived by Siobhan Davies and Victoria Miro for spring 2009 in London. Click for more details.
