Having spent time creating and discovering layers within the Portraits, we then inserted a new section, a ’song’ of one small moment taken from the original portrait material. Adding in this new change of rhythm and quality really challenged my feeling of stability and the ’knowing’ of the Portrait. I had the feeling I lost something, that I couldn’t find a way back in.. My response was very revealing to me and I realised that feeling stable (or the desire for it) was actually not that helpful.
In order to maintain the etching of the material and the openness of form that I was seeking, I needed to inhabit the places that felt edgy, uncomfortable even. This encouraged me to take a step back, to almost witness myself from the outside, and therefore be consistent with a ‘freshness’ of performance and be true to the embodiment of the intention.
