60|40 Starting Point Series 2011

Visual Art Exhibition

Phoebe Cummings, Julie Cook and Michelle Shields

This summer, crafts collective 60|40 presents the third of its Starting Point Series in collaboration with Siobhan Davies Studios. Phoebe Cummings (ceramics), Julie Cook (textiles) and Michelle Shields (applied arts)will exhibit works which explore the relationship between the Studios and their own practices.

60|40 aims to encourage new thinking in the applied arts and, project by project, expand the environment for experimental applied arts. Starting Point Series presents work made by artists in response to Siobhan Davies Studios’ building and its activities.

Phoebe Cummings has constructed an intricate pulley system of suspended clay objects, with the aim to investigate elements of choreography in relation to industrial production. By drawing attention to the rules and rhythms of a set task, where gravity and balance must be negotiated, Cummings transforms a seemingly repetitive task into something far more detailed and creative.

Textile artist Julie Cook presents a series of interventions to comfort and protect the body. She combines found materials such as duvets, blankets, pillowcases and stitch, to create panaceas for our human condition. Historically the studios lay in the shadows of the notorious Bethlem Hospital, a place of suffering and pain. Cook explores our need for release through embodiment and movement.

Royal College of Art graduate Michelle Shields archives the construction of an object in iron and silver, drawing attention to the physicality of time through repetition.
