He has full professional indemnity insurance via membership of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists.
What is podiatry?
Podiatry/chiropody involves the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the feet and lower limbs. Podiatrists help prevent and correct deformity, keep people mobile and active, help relieve pain and treat infections of the skin and nails.
Benefits of podiatry
Podiatry can address common foot/leg problems such as:- forefoot pain
- heel pain
- Achilles tendinopathy
- calluses (hard skin)
- blisters
- problem toenails
- warts
- fungal infections of the nails and skin
- biomechanical and gait assessments can be carried out and orthotics or insoles can be dispensed
Appointments
Standard appointments are 30 minutes. Longer treatment sessions and biomechanical assessments last between 45 mins and 1 hour, depending on the problem. This will be discussed when you make your appointment.
The standard 30 minute podiatry appointment is recommended for:
- corn removal
- hard skin removal
- nailcutting
- problem toenails
- fungal infections of the nails and skin
What happens at a podiatry appointment?
At your first appointment the podiatrist will take a detailed medical history, together with full details of the problem, and will carry out a physical examination. On this basis a treatment plan will be suggested and discussed, and treatment and/or advice will usually be given.
Please bring with you:
- your usual footwear (including your usual dance and street shoes)
- any orthotics/insoles you have been prescribed by a clinician
- full details (e.g. a copy of your prescription list), if you take any prescription medication
Before you arrive, please remove any toenail polish, because full assessment includes an examination of the toenails.
Podiatry instruments used during treatments are sterile, single-use, and are new for each patient.
A biomechanical assessment is recommended for long-term chronic conditions or assessment for orthoses.
Biomechanical assessments involve:
- taking a detailed medical history
- a neurovascular examination (an examination of nerves and blood flow to the lower limb)
- an assessment of foot structure and foot posture
- a hypermobility assessment
- testing musculoskeletal strength of the lower limb
- gait assessment
The podiatrist will need to see your lower legs, knees, hips, spine and torso clearly for assessment, so suitable clothing (such as shorts) that allows this should be worn.
