Hosted at SDS | Stimming Exchange Sat 17 May 2025, 2 – 4pm

With Xan Dye in collaboration with Entelachy Arts’ Ambient Jam Collective.

Take part in a collective conversation between mark making, movement and sound. Stimming Exchange is a collaborative performance improvisation with Xan Dye, Gerald Curtis and Ambient Jam Collective.

Ambient Jam is a weekly multi-sensory improvisation led by people labeled with PMLD, collaborating with dancers, musicians and visual artists to explore shared presence and reciprocity. Ambient Jam is produced by Entelechy Arts.

Stimming Exchange is a Relaxed Event. Arrive anytime, come and go as needed. Your presence, movements, sounds and scribblings are all welcome. There will be some seating, soft cushions and space to move. A Quiet Space will be available throughout.

We will be working with non-toxic art materials that may mark clothes. Depending on how you choose to interact, you may wish to wear clothes that you are happy to get messy.

This project is supported by Arts Council England through National Lottery Project Grants.

what to expect

What will STIMMING EXCHANGE sound like?

We draw attention to the rhythms and shapes of our mark making by taping contact microphones to the paper. These pick up and amplify the drawing sounds which are met with musical sounds from the electric cello and of people’s voices and movements. We will create loud crescendo moments and quieter intervals.

* Ear protection will be available and there is a chill out space if you need a sensory break.

At STIMMING EXCHANGE we invite you too…

Observe and witness —take in the sounds, movements, and atmosphere at your own pace and chosen space.

Move, stim and dance —explore how the rhythms in room move you whether rocking, tapping or dancing.

Draw —explore what happens when your drawing is guided by sensation, rhythm and repetition.

Listen or respond to sound —bring your attention to sounds and music, your voice and movements are a welcome part of it.

Rest and recalibrate —rest and get comfy in the main space or in the chill-out space when you need a sensory break or time out to recalibrate.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Xan Dye (they/them) and Gerald Curtis (he/him)

Xan and Gerald share a collaborative performance practice exploring stimming -a manifestation of their neurodivergence. For Xan, the intersection of stimming and dance is a way to explore access and define a neuro-queer approach to movement practice. Gerald has been developing a neurodivergent art language which merges drawing and painting with performance and sound. Together, their collaboration is called Practicing in Parallel.

Shane Waltener (he/him) + Zoe Gilmour (she/her)

Shane and Zoe are longtime Entelechy artists. They are collaborating with Xan and Gerald to create an immersive, sensory environment for Ambient Jam members and visitors of STIMMING EXCHANGE. Shane is focusing on materials and how we interact with space while Zoe is working with sound and composition.

Ambient Jam Collective

Ambient Jam Collective is an ensemble of differently abled and disabled creatives with and without PMLD who come from Entelechy Arts’ weekly Ambient Jam sessions. Ambient Jam Collective takes the improvisation into public spaces, such as arts venues or outside in nature. Ambient Jammers produce culturally radical moments which expand what art can be.
