Unscary Saturdays | Connecting Through Tango with Anna Sat 10 May 2025, 1 – 3pm

A challenging and generous space to dance.

Going to a dance class can be scary! Unscary Saturdays are inclusive classes open to all ages and abilities, from professional dancers to untrained enthusiastic movers. The aim is to dismantle the unhelpful pressures and sense of intimidation that can often be felt in dance spaces.

This is a chance to try out dance styles that you’ve always wanted to give a go but felt too scared OR that you did long ago but feel out of practice with now. Come with a keenness to explore movement and an openness to try stuff. Children 12 years and under must be accompanied by a participating adult.

In this session, Anna Alvarez will introduce ‘Tango Salon’. Following a release based warm-up of weight transference and posture drills we will explore the grounding, connecting and creative side of Tango. This will involve leader/ follower roles and touch although adaptations can be given for non-touch partnering.

We will explore musicality through the embrace and by the end of the session you will be able to dance, improvise and move to Tango! We will also talk about the socio-cultural influences of Tango and its relationship to other dances of the Latin diaspora and North American Jazz. ¡Vamos!

About Anna

Anna is a Latinx dancer, movement director, choreographer and pedagogue working across Theatre, Dance, Opera and Film. She aims to bring a great sense of focus and joyful artistry to her work.

Specialising in movement of the Latin diaspora, Anna is a celebrated dancer and teacher of Tango working across the UK and internationally. Anna works also with creative teams supporting movement, dance and body connectivity through creating sensory, visually arresting work in a creative and supportive environment. She likes to interrogate the ways that we use our bodies, our relationship with the UK, the environment and the third spaces created by being in between cultures, races and the complexity this presents.  Underpinning all the work is the idea that space is bound up with power, politics and can be transformed.
