Workshop with Annie Sat 7 Dec – Sun 8 Dec 2024, 12.30 - 5.30pm

A weekend workshop with SDS’s Co-Artistic Director Annie Pui Ling Lok.

Our annual offer to join our Artistic Director Annie Pui Ling Lok in the studio returns. In previous years the workshops have focused on the following: ‘Why dance?’ ‘How do I create?’ and ‘How do I want to dance in contact now?’

This workshop takes Annie’s experience of navigating permission and expectation in her dancing as a starting point: whether alone or with others, in response to her body changing, and with a renewed urgency to ask “what is OK?”

This year’s weekend workshop explores questions:

  • What is it like to dance with an injured/ageing/____ body (mine or my partner’s)?
  • What does enthusiastic consent feel/look like in solo and contact dancing for me?
  • How do I give and receive clear and honest no’s and enough’s and not feel bad about it?

We will use this weekend to exercise shared responsibility in the studio by looking at evolving clarity, honesty and respect for ourselves and others in dancing. We will give space to play with what pushing and challenging ourselves positively is and feels like for each of us.

Each day gives time to prepare bodies and minds through:

  • Solo time
  • Rest
  • Duet and group scores

The workshop will combine elements of Annie’s work – performance, choreography, contact improvisation, and biodynamic craniosacral therapy. Guided work in tuning proprioception, observing physical sensations and use of anatomical and physiological information, will lead us into noticing choice, agency, and desire.

Suitable for professional dancers and those with experience in dance improvisation and working in respectful contact/partnership with others.
