How does writing come from dance? Using examples, practical exercises, weekly take-home assignments and sharing sessions, we’ll look at various ways that writing can connect with dance as subject and as source, with reference to videos and texts.
We’ll start by looking at the position we write from, what we write about and who we write to or for. Subsequent sessions cover different writing modes, including informational, observational, critical, poetic and personal. The course is based on learning by doing: by the end, participants will have produced several texts of their own in different styles, and gained:
• an appreciation of different ways that dance can be treated in writing
• an awareness of different writing tools and techniques, and their effects
• an understanding that writing is communication, not just representation or expression
Circumstances permitting, there may be an opportunity for a group outing to a dance performance.
Practical interest in writing is more important than expertise in dance. Good written English is required.
