Dr. Adesola Akinleye is a choreographer artist-scholar. She trained in dance at The Rambert Academy. She began her career as a dancer with Dance Theatre of Harlem, later working in UK with companies such as Green Candle and Union Dance. Currently she leads her own company DancingStrong. Last summer DancingStrong toured the UK with two works made (with and) for young audiences – ‘Found’ & ‘Light Steps’.
Her choreographic awards include One Dance UK Champion Trailblazer & Bonnie Bird New Choreography Award, ADAD Trailblazer award. She was awarded Woman of the Year in Community Dance by the Town of Islip, New York. A Fellow of the RSA, she has published in the field of dance and social sciences. She holds a MA (Distinction) from Middlesex University and a PhD from Canterbury Christ Church University. Her PhD thesis ‘BODY, DANCE AND ENVIRONMENT: AN EXPLORATION OF EMBODIMENT AND IDENTITY’ included looking at how school spaces impact on learning and student sense of embodied-self. Adesola lectures at Middlesex University and is currently carrying out movement research as a Fellow with Theatrum Mundi, looking at how choreographers, architects and engineers can work together to choreograph Place.
