Anri Sala was born 1974 in Tirana, Albania. He studied painting at the Académie National des Arts in Tirana before moving to France where he studied at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and at the Studio National des Arts Contemporais at Le Fresnoy, Tourcoung.
In 1998 Sala released Intervista, Finding the words, a work that brought him critical acclaim and international attention. He has shown internationally since his emergence in Manifesta 3 in 2000. The same year he received the Prix Gilles Dusein Paris. His work has been included in the 2001 and 2003 Biennials in Venice, for the former of which he was awarded a special prize for the best young artist.
His work has featured in numerous biennials and group shows. Recent solo exhibitions include Purchase Not By Moonlight at the Moca Miami, which will also be shown at the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati from 30 May to September 6 this year. Sala now lives and works in Berlin.
