Shannelle ‘Tali’ Fergus | Mum. Edit. More | The words “DANCING TO GENTRIFIED BRIXTON” are emblazoned over an image of a person who is balancing in a seated position balancing with their arms outstretched. They wear a black top, black jeans and trainers and the background is olive green.

Material Archive: Mum. Edit. More

An exhibition exploring the human voice, gentrification and change, from Shannelle ‘Tali’ Fergus. Part of Artist Archive.

Conceived during Talawa Firsts 2017 and since performed at Rich Mix, The Place and Wellcome, Mum. Edit. More is a highly personal and poignant audio-visual journey exploring the beauty of the human voice, pondering the effects of gentrification and reflecting on the nature of change. The Material Archive took the form of journal extracts, voice notes and video recordings installed throughout the studios.

Responses

“Deeply compelling.  It’s so important for more people, if anything EVERYONE to listen and learn from this topic … It was impactful and touching to hear from Nabil and Tali who have been at the core of it.”

“I am deeply grateful for Tali’s intuitive and ongoing commitment to community building. And her curating of frankly ingenious people, ideas and causes into one space … I loved the breath, bantz and intimacy.”

“Incredible, honest, accessible, buoying and motivating. A series of works, thoughts, moments that has allowed me to access, see, understand and find out more and learn to be an agent for care and sustainability.”

Reflections

“As a Black working-class storyteller, I’ve always been inspired by the people who have come before me and the traces I can see of their impact in the tenacity and drive of my peers, regardless of their class and upbringing.”

“How can we create conditions for the people who don’t have the space to – to dream, imagine and create? How can we empower people with the information to take action towards the change they want to see?”
