Material Archive: UKG Cosmology

An exploration of personal and collective histories from the UK garage rave scene, from Angel Zinovieff. Part of Artist Archive.

UKG Cosmology brought together a collection of works made between 2014 and 2023. Reflecting on sonic, choreographic and social histories of the UK garage rave scene of the early 2000’s, it mapped themes such as joy in collective movement, transcendence, madness, the power of the imagination and the division of time. Weaving both deeply personal and collective experiences, the work encompassed archival materials, video work, music and text.

The archive closed with a two-part performance and dance party. The performance begun with an experimental lecture and guided tour leading us through the exhibition elaborating on its themes. Angel was then be joined by Siin Lee in a collaborative activation of the building, moving with and through the ‘heart space’ as a carrier of history and a place of potential.

Reflections

“It is cosmology, rave and performance.

Endearing flow over tracksuits, limbs, human, heart, face, spine, tipping, tender, lifted, raised, chair legs, legs in air.

Cosmology is: entities considered to be in the universe. It is also the symbolically constituted differentiations between entities considered to be in the universe–such as ideas, things, relations, persons.”
