Town Square: Listening Circles

Listen and be heard.

Town Square: Listening Circles are a facilitated online space to come together to listen and be heard. These confidential spaces encourage communities to reflect, co-exist, connect, build empathy and understand each other. We aim for equity in the space, trusting and co-holding the process, facilitated by Co-artistic director Kat Bridge.

  • A circle is for a maximum of 8 participants
  • Each person has the opportunity to be listened to and witnessed over 3 timed rounds in response to 3 questions.
  • For each round you will have 2-3 minutes of uninterrupted time where you can speak to the room, be silent, pass or leave the room.

Questions we will use:

  1. How are you and what’s on your mind?
  2. Where are you at after listening to round 1?
  3. What has resonated for you today? What are you taking away?

Our Town Square offer is made up Studio, Co-working, Chat and Listening Circle spaces. Find out about each strand here.

The next Town Square: Listening Circle will happen online on Fri 1 Mar at 1.30pm. It will last 70 minutes.

Please book a place in advance. This is a free activity but you are invited to donate to a local charity when you book. This season we are raising money for Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers.

Please note: the previously advertised date of Fri 16 Feb has been cancelled.

More about the process

Unlike other group sessions, there is no need to solve, sort or save within this process. As we choose what to articulate, we can think out loud and sometimes reach clarity. As we are witnessed without judgement or reaction, we see ourselves. By listening deeply, we can build connection and empathy.

We will use the Relational Dynamics 1st principles for participating in the Listening Circle:

  • Courage: Have faith in our emotional selves to be with discomfort and vulnerability if possible.
  • Care: Take care of yourself and others. Give your full attention, listen with all your senses.
  • Choice: Exercise choice in this voluntary exercise in order to be as comfortable as possible.
  • Connection: Notice what unites us as well as notice what makes us different.
  • Confidentiality: You can share the Listening Circle process but never the content.

This practice of Listening Circles is in line with RD1st Listening Circles, inspired by Carl Rogers and Spaces for Listening developed by Brigid Russell (Coach) & Charlie Jones (Clinical Psychologist) in 2020 during the pandemic.

ONLINE INFO & ACCESS SESSIONs

Attending something new can feel worrying and timed formats can be accessible for some and not others – however, Listening Circles is an open tool. At our Info and Access sessions, you can ask questions about Listening Circles and make suggestions for formats to meet different access requirements. You can also contact us at contact@siobhandavies.com or 020 7091 9650 if you prefer, or are unable to attend a session.

Fundraising for local charities

As part of Town Square, we encourage bookers to donate to a selected local charity. These charities are chosen to reflect our values and ways of working. Town Square users are invited to donate to the charity directly, if they feel they are able. This season we will be raising money for Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers (SDCAS) who provide a range of services to promote general wellbeing, health and education among asylum seekers, refugees and migrants in South London. You can find out more about them and the work they do here: sdcas.org.uk.
