Twenty MA students from the Royal College of Art filled the building with site-specific works that responded in some way to the space, demonstrating a lively individual response, with each student bringing their own agenda. The architecture of the building is characterised by a fusion of old and new, tactility, sensitivity and attention to detail. These qualities are echoed in the objects and installations that were realised by each student selected to exhibit.
The resulting responses from the MA students were an eclectic mix, ideas were far ranging with works that evoked and provoked, that look at ways of providing intimate experiences, and that create atmosphere, humour and wonder. The ceramic and glass interventions sit comfortably alongside multimedia, retaining respect for skill and process whilst exploring contemporary departures that challenge traditional material perceptions and associations.
Out of Practice is part of an on-going project in the Ceramics and Glass Department for students to make work in response to external venues. Previous installations have taken place in Canary Wharf, Leighton House and Sir John Soane’s Museum.
