And to watch a dance is to lazily trace relationships
That amount to something that might mean something
But are quickly wiped away
- Traces, Jonathan Burrows (material / rearranged / to / be, 2016)
Over the coming year we are opening the doors of Siobhan Davies Studios and inviting three visual artists the opportunity to explore, reflect and create in our building. The Traces Commissions launches a new approach to our visual arts programme by giving international visual artists an opportunity to make new work resulting from their extended encounter with the choreographic practices that enliven our spaces. The artists invited for the residencies are Katinka Bock, Bernardo Ortiz and Webb-Ellis.
A text written by choreographer Jonathan Burrows for the catalogue of our recent performance installation work, material / rearranged / to / be, will act as a starting point for the commissions. Within the text the Burrows suggests that dance leaves traces on the body of the dancer, in the mind of the viewer and in the history of the art form. The commission invites the artists to respond to the traces their encounter with dance makes on their thinking and their practices.
Siobhan Davies Dance has a long history of exploring the point at which choreography and visual arts meet. Previously our studios have hosted a number of exhibitions and much of our dance work appears in the gallery environment. The Traces Commissions aims to bring visual artists and dance artists closer together in an creative dialogue over the course of a year that will have a lasting impact on both art forms.
There will be a number of opportunities throughout the Traces Commissions visual arts residencies to follow the journey and experience the process of creation. Stay up to date with what’s going on by joining our mailing list.
The Traces Commissions are supported by The Henry Moore Foundation
The work of Katinka Bock will recieve additional support from the Goethe-Institut London and Fluxus Art Projects
