Siobhan Davies and David Hinton's 2015 film The Running Tongue screens as part of The Whitworth's Saturday Suppliment, a day of performance, workshops, film and conversations to accompany material / rearranged / to / be.
The Running Tongue is a film installation made with sound artists, animators and 22 dance artists.
Located in London, the film takes as its starting point a ten-second loop of a running woman, freezing at random intervals to reveal selected frames each created by a different dance artist. Within a familiar cityscape of tube stations, housing estates, cafes and parks, extraordinary and comical scenes emerge – a sweet potato becomes an object of worship, fragmented limbs lie on the floor of an empty train concourse and a woman contemplating a picture suddenly dissolves into dust.
Defying the usual conventions of cinematic form, the film is edited live in real time by a custom programmed computer so that the work can play continuously, but never in the same configuration.
