Join Seke Chimutengwende to experiment and learn about choreography through our six week course for adults. Develop skills to use improvisation, instructions and rules to create and set movement.
Over 6 weeks participants will investigate the relationship between choreography and improvisation, exploring how improvisation can be used as part of the process to create dance.
No previous dance or choreographic experience required.
Weeks 1 and 2
What is improvisation? What is choreography? Why improvise? Why choreograph? What happens when the two meet or even clash? We will begin by considering the effect of setting movement and of using improvisation to create choreography. Within a supportive environment participants will create, perform and discuss choreography devised using simple scores (instructions, rules and structures) that include and allow for improvisation as well as pre-determined movements. Learn about ways of working and grow your choreographic vocabulary.
Weeks 3 and 4
What might move you to choreograph? How do you turn your artistic interests into structures, rules or instructions for performance? Participants will be guided to create solo and group scores that follow your artistic interests. With Seke’s support you will go on to direct group scores, and consider ways to include chance and allow performers’ to have agency.
Weeks 5 and 6
Participants will determine how they want to proceed. Do you enjoy being in your own work? Is it more interesting to direct others, be directed, or work collaboratively? Participants will refine and play with scores individually and collaboratively that continue to test the effect of improvisation against setting material. The course will culminate in an opportunity to share and discuss these sketches together.
Cost for 6-week course: £135
