“An early morning wonder” “Giving hope in difficult times” These just a couple of immediate audience responses to EMOTION last month. 68 performers and a sold-out show. The desire to gather at dawn was as strong as hoped and the performance dissolved into a time limbo in-between days. In this moment when emotions are being weaponised to oppress, EMOTION pays homage to those whose emotions and stories are being silenced and erased.
Read the collected reviews of EMOTION here – thank you to Dive(rse) Dance, Jay and Lydia Wharf in Dance Art Journal and Maya Giulivi wrote a personal and poetic participant reflection.
In this newsletter, we launch our Autumn programme of events to gather and move together. It’s also packed with opportunities. Two are invitations to be involved in what happens at SDS through our Community Board Open Call and open applications for Trustees – for those who might not usually think of applying, we urge you to take a look. Applications to NEXT Choreography are also still open to young artists who want to experiment with dance and choreography.
Plus! Later this month, we’ll launch two commissions: one for new Courtyard furniture and our programme questioning what an archive can be and who gets to have one returns with an Artist Archive Film Night. And keep an eye out for co-run sessions in October exploring breaking/remaking tradition in collaboration with New Earth Theatre and degrowth economics as performance with Chaga Collective.
Remember that there are many ways to make the most of the studios at SDS, whether it’s through our Town Square communal offer, Space for Action providing hosting fundraising and community-building, or our regular Space Hire offer for rehearsals, events, parties and more.
Finally – to everyone who contributed to the many donations gathered during Refugee Week for Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers: Thank You!
